Giants Lose Quarterback Option In 2025 NFL Draft
Giants Lose Daniel Jones
The Giants stumbled into the 2022 NFL Draft after their new General Manager, Joe Schoen, was hired less than two weeks before the draft, and had to go with the flow of the prior regime's plans, which included the selection of Oregon pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux with the 5th overall pick in the draft. Schoen did trade back twice in the first round, acquiring additional picks he used to select Alabama tackle Evan Neal and Florida cornerback Kaiir Elam with the 7th and 23rd overall picks, respectively, but it's no secret that the Giants were hoping to land their future franchise quarterback, a player they believe can take them back to the playoffs after several down years, and weren't able to do so.
Coming into the 2023 off-season, that goal remained the same for Schoen, and one of his top priorities was to move on from former first round pick Daniel Jones. Despite Schoen's public support for Jones, there were reports throughout the season that he was not a part of the team's long-term plans. That was obvious after the Giants declined Jones' 5th-year option and will now let him play out the final year of his rookie deal.
With Jones likely on the way out, the Giants were one of several teams expected to be in the mix for one of the top quarterbacks in the 2023 NFL Draft. C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young, and Anthony Richardson were all in play for the Giants, but after another disappointing season in which they finished 5-11, the G-Men are instead looking at the 2024 NFL Draft to fill their need at quarterback. The 2023 draft class was widely considered to be the deepest in the history of the NFL Draft at the position, with as many as 6 quarterbacks expected to be taken in the first round. Instead, the Giants will now have to hope that the 2024 class is just as good, if not better, than this year's group.
2025 Quarterback Class
The 2025 NFL Draft quarterback class is still taking shape, but there are a few names that have already emerged as potential first-round picks. Arch Manning, the nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning, is the top-ranked quarterback in the class and is expected to be one of the first players taken overall. Other quarterbacks who could be in play for the Giants include Cade Klubnik of Clemson, Dante Moore of Oregon, and Nico Iamaleava of Tennessee. The Giants have a long history of drafting quarterbacks in the first round, and it would not be surprising to see them do so again in 2025.
The Giants have a lot of needs to fill on their roster, but quarterback is clearly their biggest priority. They will have to hope that one of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft is still available when they are on the clock. If they are able to land a franchise quarterback, it could be the missing piece that they need to get back to the playoffs.
Conclusion
The Giants have a lot of work to do in order to get back to being a contender, but landing a franchise quarterback is the most important step they can take. The 2025 NFL Draft is still two years away, but the Giants should already be thinking about who they want to target at the position. If they are able to land one of the top quarterbacks in the class, it could be the key to getting them back to the playoffs.
