The Detroit Red Wings have recalled defenseman Moritz Seider from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL) amid injury concerns on the blue line.
The Red Wings have been hit hard by injuries on defense, with Filip Hronek and Jake Walman currently out of the lineup. Hronek has missed the past four games with a lower-body injury, while Walman has been out since October 22 with a hand injury.
Seider, the Red Wings' first-round pick (sixth overall) in the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, has impressed in his time with the Griffins. In 14 games this season, he has recorded three goals, seven assists, and a +10 rating.
"We're excited to have Moritz back with us," said Red Wings general manager Steve Yzerman in a statement. "He's a talented young defenseman who has played well in Grand Rapids. We're hoping he can provide us with some depth on the blue line while Hronek and Walman are out."
Seider's recall adds depth to the Red Wings' defense, which has been struggling with injuries and poor play. Detroit ranks 29th in the NHL in goals allowed per game (4.00) and has allowed at least four goals in six of their last seven games.
It remains unclear when Hronek and Walman will return from their injuries. In the meantime, Seider is expected to play a significant role for the Red Wings, who are currently in last place in the NHL standings.
If Seider can continue to play well, he could earn a permanent spot in the Red Wings' lineup. The 21-year-old defenseman has shown great promise in his young career and could be a key part of the Red Wings' future.
