Williams, a promising young player who saw significant time last season as a freshman, suffered a catastrophic knee injury during the Hawkeyes' first practice of the 2023 fall camp. Head coach Kirk Ferentz confirmed that Williams tore his ACL and MCL, ending his season prematurely.
Williams had quickly established himself as a key contributor for Iowa. Last season, he rushed for 319 yards and three touchdowns, averaging over 5 yards per carry. His agility and explosiveness made him a valuable asset to the Hawkeyes' offense.
"I'm heartbroken for Gavin," said Coach Ferentz. "He's worked so hard, and this is a devastating blow. He's a tremendous young man and a talented player. Our thoughts and prayers are with him during this difficult time."
Despite the setback, Coach Ferentz remains optimistic about the Hawkeyes' upcoming season. "We have a lot of depth at the running back position, and I'm confident that we'll be able to overcome this adversity," he said.
Williams' injury will mean increased playing time for other running backs, including sophomore Leshon Williams and redshirt freshman Kaleb Johnson. Both players have shown flashes of potential and will be given the opportunity to step up in Williams' absence.
Williams is expected to undergo surgery in the coming days and will begin his rehabilitation process immediately. The Hawkeyes' hope is that he will make a full recovery and return to the field next season.
