Hallie Biden, the widow of former Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden, testified in her brother-in-law Hunter Biden's gun trial on Wednesday, providing a glimpse into the family's struggles with addiction and mental health.
Hallie Biden's testimony focused largely on Hunter's struggles with addiction and behavior in the lead-up to and aftermath of his father, Vice President Joe Biden's, election in 2020. She recalled how Hunter had been struggling with substance abuse for years, and that his behavior had become increasingly erratic in recent months.
Hallie Biden also described how Hunter's addiction had taken a toll on his relationship with her late husband, Beau. She said that Beau had been deeply concerned about his brother's well-being, but that he had been unable to help him.
Hunter Biden's defense attorney, Chris Cashman, argued that his client was not guilty of the gun charge because he was not a "prohibited person" under Delaware law. Cashman pointed to the fact that Hunter had passed a background check when he purchased the gun in 2018.
Cashman also argued that Hunter's drug use did not make him a "danger to others" and that he was not a threat to himself or to others.
The prosecution, however, argued that Hunter Biden was a "prohibited person" because he had been dishonorably discharged from the military for drug use. They also presented evidence that Hunter had been involved in a number of incidents involving firearms, including a 2018 incident in which he allegedly pointed a gun at his wife.
The prosecution also called witnesses who testified that Hunter Biden had been erratic and unstable in the months leading up to the gun purchase.
The jury is expected to begin deliberating on Hunter Biden's fate on Thursday. If convicted, he faces a potential 5-year prison sentence.
The trial has been closely watched by both sides of the political aisle, with Democrats largely supporting Hunter Biden and Republicans largely condemning him.
Regardless of the outcome of the trial, the proceedings have shed light on the struggles of the Biden family with addiction and mental health, and the challenges faced by veterans who return home from war with PTSD and other mental health issues.
