ByHuntsville, AL - Alabama A&M University is mourning the tragic death of 20-year-old football player Medrick Burnett Jr., who passed away on Tuesday after sustaining a head injury during a game.
On Saturday, September 10th, during the Bulldogs' home game against Alabama State University, Burnett was injured while making a tackle. He was immediately taken to Huntsville Hospital, where he underwent surgery for a subdural hematoma, a collection of blood on the brain.
Despite the medical intervention, Burnett's condition worsened over the following days. On Monday, he was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, for specialized care. However, his injuries proved to be too severe.
The university and Burnett's family are devastated by the loss. "Medrick was a beloved member of our football team and the entire A&M community," said Alabama A&M President Dr. Andrew Hugine. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time."
The football community has expressed its sorrow and support for the Burnett family and the Alabama A&M community. "Medrick was a talented player and an even better person," said Alabama State University head coach Donald Hill-Eley. "We extend our deepest condolences to everyone who knew him."
